Are you sprinting through your calendar but still feel like you’re falling behind in life? That’s not a time problem. That’s a purpose problem.
In my 21 years of service—including combat zones, life aboard a ship, and leading corpsmen in chaotic, high-pressure environments—time wasn’t something I could waste. But here’s the truth: I used to wear busyness like a badge of honor.
I missed both of my daughter’s milestones during a training exercise and a deployment. It was only then that I realized—I had it all backwards.
Productivity without purpose is just motion without meaning. And if we’re not careful, the mission we’re serving becomes one we never signed up for.
I want to share with you all a field-tested framework called NAVY TIME, a system I’ve used myself—and now teach leaders like you—to stop reacting and start leading your schedule with intention.
But Reden, “How can I manage my time effectively without sacrificing what matters most?”
You’re ambitious. You lead a team. You’re building a business or climbing the corporate ladder. Maybe you’ve got little ones waiting for you at home too.
But here’s the tension:
- Every calendar block screams urgency.
- You’re double-booked more often than not.
- And even when you’re home, your mind is still at work.
You keep telling yourself it’ll get better when this “busy season” ends. But what if the season isn’t the problem?
Productivity without purpose is just motion without meaning.
Solution: Purpose Over Productivity
We’ve all heard of time blocking and prioritization tactics. But those tools mean nothing unless they’re grounded in your purpose.
This is where the NAVY TIME Framework comes in.
The NAVY TIME™ Framework
A leadership acronym built from the deckplates up:
N – Non-Negotiables First:
Anchor your schedule around faith, family, fitness, and focus. These don’t move. Everything else adjusts.
A – Audit Urgency vs. Importance:
Use the Eisenhower Matrix weekly. Most “urgent” things aren’t mission critical. Learn to delegate or drop.
V – Values Alignment:
Ask: “Does this task support my long-term purpose?” If not, it’s clutter.
Y – Yes with Intention:
Every “yes” is a “no” to something else. Guard your yes like mission gear—your time depends on it.
T – Team Up:
You don’t have to do this alone. Empower others at home and work. Trust the team and stop carrying it all.
I – Invest in White Space:
White space isn’t a luxury—it’s leadership oxygen. Block time to think, reflect, and breathe.
M – Mission Rehearsal (Daily Review):
Just like we did before every op—review tomorrow today. Ask, “What’s the mission, and what’s the win?”
E – Execute with Presence:
Wherever you are—be all there. Multitasking robs your impact. Presence is your leadership superpower.
Story from the Field:
The latter part of my service, I had additional responsibilities that came when I moved up the ranks. Which meant I was pouring more of time in the work instead of allocating that to my family. I missed both my girls walking for the first time. I was out on a deployment when my oldest starting walking. My youngest, I was on a training exercise out in the middle of the California desert.

So I created the Purpose Audit.
- What am I doing that matters?
- What can someone else do?
- What have I said “yes” to that’s draining me?
I set up “Dad-Daughter Days.” I made my daily mission include family dinner. And guess what?
My team thrived, too.
When your time reflects your values, everyone wins.
Here’s a Deeper Problem:
“What if everything feels urgent? How do I say no without guilt?”
This comes down to identity. Many high-achievers tie their worth to output. Saying no feels like weakness.
But leadership isn’t about doing it all—it’s about doing the right things well.
Here’s a challenge: Look at your calendar. Does it reflect what you say you care about? Does it reflect what you truly value?
If not—it’s time to course correct.
Summary:
You don’t need more hours. You need more intention.
Your calendar is a reflection of your convictions, not your capacity.
