Delegation isn’t a luxury for busy leaders—it’s a leadership necessity. Done right, it builds better teams and gives you your time back.
Stop Being the Bottleneck
Let’s be honest: too many leaders wear “I do it all” like a badge of honor.
But here’s the truth I had to learn the hard way—doing everything myself didn’t make me a better leader. It made me exhausted, short-fused, and ineffective.
Intentional leadership means knowing when to step in—and when to step aside. Delegation is how we create margin for important things. This includes strategy, vision, and yes, time with the people we love most.
“How Do I Delegate Without Losing Control?”
You’ve built your reputation on high standards. You like things done a certain way—your way. Delegating might feel like giving up control or risking mistakes.
But here’s the real problem: trying to do everything yourself makes you the bottleneck. And bottlenecks don’t scale.
Whether you’re leading in a boardroom or doing it all at work while raising kids, you need to delegate. Otherwise, you will limit your impact.
The OPP Model™
To delegate without chaos, use the OPP Model™—Organize, Plan, Perform.
Here’s how it works:
O – Organize:
Start by identifying which tasks must stay on your plate vs. what can be offloaded. Use the “Impact vs Time” grid to triage your daily workload.
P – Plan:
Set the delegation up for success. Be clear on the what, why, and desired outcome. Equip your team with the tools and context they need. Planning upfront saves frustration later.
P – Perform:
Let them do the work—don’t hover. Check in, support, and coach. Resist the urge to redo everything “your way.” Growth comes through trust and accountability.
Delegating in Business & at Home
When I launched my coaching business, I thought I could do it all: marketing, managing clients bookkeeping. I had spreadsheets for everything and zero white space on my calendar.
One day, it hit me. I was burned out. I had to step away for a while and just get some clarity.
That’s when I applied the OPP Model.
I organized my weekly tasks. I planned out which ones I could hand off. I also hired a part-time VA. It didn’t work out in the long run with the VA. However, I was able to prioritize. I made better use of my time. Within weeks, I had more energy, more clarity—and yes, more time to show up fully as a dad and leader.
Delegation didn’t make me less capable—it made me more focused.
“But What If They Mess It Up?”
Here’s the reality: mistakes will happen.
But you know what’s worse? Being the only one holding the vision and never letting others grow into their role.
Mistakes are teachable moments. And they’re part of building resilient, responsible teams. It’s not about perfection. It’s about progress—and partnership.
Free Yourself to Lead
Delegation isn’t about laziness or ego—it’s about leadership. When done with intention, it builds capacity, develops future leaders, and gives you the margin to lead at your highest level.
You don’t have to do it all. You just need to lead it well.
