Mission-Critical Goals: Lead with the SMART Way

Ever feel like you’re chasing too many goals at once and ending up exhausted… with little to show for it?

I’ve been there. I learned a powerful truth during my 21 years as a Senior Enlisted Leader in the United States Navy. Whether in combat zones, coordinating shipboard operations, or leading a team under tight deadlines, if everything is a priority, nothing is.

The same applies to leadership at home or in business. Without clear focus, we drift. And leaders don’t drift—we direct.

Let’s explore a framework that’s saved my sanity. It has helped my clients focus and has even kept me aligned when the pressure’s on.

You lead better when you lead intentionally.

Too Many Goals, Not Enough Progress

Sound familiar?

  • You’re overwhelmed with possibilities and not sure where to start.
  • You write goals down, but they stay on the page.
  • You feel like you’re busy all day, yet the important stuff isn’t moving forward.

SMART Goals (The Navy Chief Way)

The SMART Framework (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) isn’t new—but when done with intention, it’s a game changer.

Here’s how I adapt it with my Intentional Leader Lens:

1. Specific

The mission must be crystal clear. Replace vague goals with concrete objectives.

❌ “Get in shape” → ✅ “Complete 3 home workouts this week.”

2. Measurable

On a ship, we track everything. What you measure gets managed.

Set a number, a milestone, or a frequency.

3. Achievable

Set yourself up to win. Don’t aim for “climb Everest” when you’re struggling to walk a mile.

4. Relevant

Align it with your current season and your long-term mission.

For parents who run businesses and their family: Will this support your family or just fill your plate?
For executive and corporate leaders: Will this develop your people or just check a box?

5. Time-bound

Deadlines drive action. Give your goals a date—and stick to it like it’s a deployment schedule.

Real Talk: Motivation Will Dip. Then What?

Setting goals is easy. Following through? That’s the real leadership.

Momentum will fade with motivation. That’s why accountability matters.

In the military, we had watch partners and battle buddies. In life? You need a tribe—or a coach—who can help you to stay aligned.

My Personal Story

During a deployment overseas, I once tried to juggle too many goals at once. I was overseeing a medical unit and training junior sailors. I was also supporting operations. Additionally, I was managing my own fitness and mental resilience.

Guess what? Everything suffered.

Once I sat down and identified my one mission-critical goal each week, things changed. Focus returned. Morale improved. So did results.

Now, as a dad, husband, and leadership coach, I still apply this approach. And it works.
