18 Hours, Two Kids, and One Massive Realization

Have you ever spent 18 hours straight in a car with your family? If you have, you’re either a saint or a glutton for punishment. Or, if you’re like me, you’re a "Parentpreneur" trying to bridge the gap between building a legacy and actually being present for the people that legacy is for.

This past week, we hit the road. Texas to Florida. 1,000+ miles. We saw the sunrise hit the interstate, watched the trees change as we crossed state lines, and made the mandatory pilgrimage to Buc-ee’s for snacks and photos. My girls, Solenn and Ella, were absolute rockstars. Solenn’s laugh is contagious, it’s the kind of sound that makes you forget you’ve been sitting in a driver’s seat for ten hours. Ella, eventually, succumbed to the hum of the road and fell asleep, only to wake up the second we pulled into the resort.

But as I sat there, gripping the steering wheel while the world blurred past at 75 mph, a thought hit me harder than the caffeine from my third cup of coffee: Be where your feet are.

It sounds simple, right? It’s the kind of thing you see on a motivational poster in a breakroom. But for high-performers, for the CEOs, the managers, and the leaders I coach, it is one of the hardest disciplines to master. We are professional time-travelers. Our minds are either in the past, analyzing a meeting that went sideways, or in the future, worrying about next quarter’s projections.

Rarely are we ever right here. Right where our feet are.

The Contrast of the "Hustle"

The trip wasn't just about vacation vibes and rubber duckies at the splash pad. Life doesn't pause just because you're on the I-10.

While we were in Jacksonville, I spent time with my parents, Lolo and Lola. We weren't just reminiscing; we were handling the heavy stuff, signing living wills, Power of Attorney documents, and organizing medication lists. It’s a sobering reminder of the passage of time. At the same time, my phone was buzzing with WarRoom and GoPod calls. I was scheduling emails to local companies back in San Antonio and planning the upcoming week.

That is the reality of the modern leader. We are managing the sunset of one generation while fueling the sunrise of the next, all while keeping the engines of our businesses humming.

The I-IMPACT Brief: The Intentionality Pillar

In my coaching practice at Genuines Coaching & Consulting, I use a framework called the I-IMPACT Brief. Every week, I focus on a specific lever that moves a leader from "Drift" to "Legacy." This week, the lever is Intentionality.

Intentionality isn't just about having a to-do list. It’s about the alignment between your actions and your values.

I see so many leaders caught in "The Drift." They are successful by every external metric, but they are internally bankrupt because they aren't present. They are physically at their daughter’s dance recital, but mentally they are in a spreadsheet. They are "winning," but they aren't enjoying the win.

The Problem: Most leaders use time as an excuse. "I don't have time to be present." "I don't have time to plan."
The Solution: Shift your perspective. Time is not your enemy; it is your greatest motivator.

When I was signing those documents for my parents, I wasn't thinking about my inbox. I was where my feet were. When I was watching my girls shiver and laugh at the splash pad in Orlando, I wasn't thinking about my next coaching call. I was where my feet were.

Why Presence is a Competitive Advantage

You might be thinking, "Reden, this sounds great for a weekend trip, but I have a business to run."

Here is the truth: Presence makes you a better leader. When you are fully present in a meeting, you hear what isn't being said. When you are fully present with your team, you build trust that no "employee engagement" program can replicate.

Look at this Decision Filter Matrix:

Most of us spend our lives in the "Urgent" quadrants, reacting to fires. Intentionality moves us into the "Schedule and Strategize" quadrant. It allows us to decide where our attention goes before the world decides for us.

The Shift: Time as a Motivator

We often say, "I'll do that when I have more time." But here’s the reality check from a retired Navy Chief: You will never have "more" time. You have exactly the same 24 hours as everyone else.

The difference between a leader who leaves a legacy and one who just leaves a vacancy is how they view those hours. Stop seeing time as a constraint that prevents you from being present. Start seeing the limitation of time as the reason why you must be present.

If you only have 30 minutes with your kids before bed, make those 30 minutes legendary. If you only have 15 minutes for a one-on-one with a direct report, give them 100% of your focus. No phones. No "quick" checks of your email. Just you, where your feet are.

Moving from Drift to Legacy

Are you currently drifting?

  • Do you feel like your days are happening to you rather than for you?
  • Are you physically present but mentally absent in your most important relationships?
  • Is your business growing while your personal life is stagnating?

If you answered yes to any of those, it’s time for a realignment. We don't build legacies by accident. We build them through the relentless application of intentionality.

As you look at the Real Reflection Cycle above, ask yourself: Where do I need to Adjust? Is it your schedule? Your boundaries? Or maybe just your mindset?

Your Next Steps

I want you to try something this week. It’s a simple exercise I give my high-level coaching clients: The Feet Check.

Three times a day, literally look down at your feet. Ask yourself: "Am I here?" If the answer is no, take one deep breath, visualize your current task, and bring your mind back to the room. It sounds small, but over time, it re-wires your brain for high-performance presence.
