The Resilient Leader: How to Stay Strong When Challenges Hit Hard

Life doesn’t care about your plans. It doesn’t ask for permission before throwing challenges your way. One moment, everything is going smoothly, and the next, you’re dealing with a crisis—at work, at home, or both. The way you respond in those moments defines your leadership, your impact, and your eventually, your future.

As a Leader, you don’t have the luxury of crumbling under pressure. Your team looks to you. Your family depends on you. But here’s the hard truth: resilience isn’t about pretending everything is fine. It’s about knowing how to navigate the tough times without losing yourself in the process.

So, when challenges hit hard, how do you stay strong? Let’s break it down.

Challenges are inevitable. But burnout? That’s optional.

Step 1: Stay Connected to Your Purpose

When things get tough, your purpose is your anchor. Ask yourself: Why am I doing this? What impact do I want to create?

During my last deployment, I felt completely drained. The stress, the setbacks, the separation from my family—it all felt like too much. In addition to dealing being away from my wife and daughter, we were deployed during the COVID-19 pandemic. We had to be isolated, limited with our movement, away from others. But I reminded myself that my mission was bigger than the moment. My purpose—protecting my family and serving my team—kept me moving forward.

As a leader, your purpose is your fuel. When things feel overwhelming, take a step back and reconnect with why you started in the first place.

Connect with your purpose to help keep you moving forward.

Step 2: Lean Into Your Support Network

Let’s keep it real—no leader thrives in isolation. But too often, high achievers feel like they have to carry the weight alone. That’s a mistake and believe me, I’ve been there. I didn’t share the responsibility and didn’t learn how to delegate.

But when challenges arise, reach out. A mentor, a friend, a mastermind group—whatever your support system looks like, use it! Strong leaders don’t just give support—they receive it when needed.

Action Step: This week, reach out to someone in your network. A quick text, a coffee chat, or a simple “Hey, I appreciate you” can go a long way.

Step 3: Prioritize Self-Care

Let’s get one thing straight—resilience isn’t about running on empty until you burn out. If you’re running yourself into the ground, you’re not leading effectively. When you’re not leading effectively, your team suffers.

Resilient leaders know that taking care of themselves isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. Whether it’s exercise, journaling, or just stepping away from your phone for an hour, build self-care into your routine!

During my toughest moments, journaling became my safe space. Even in the chaos and uncertainty, writing down my thoughts helped me process stress and refocus my energy. Now I’ve made it a daily habit to summarize my day. I also write down my wins and how I can be better for tomorrow.

Action Step: This week, commit to one small act of self-care daily. Even five minutes of intentional reflection can make a difference.
